How We Started

We are collectively, the parents of Black children that are receiving their education throughout Simcoe County. Parents Against Racism Simcoe County (PARSC) was started after our founder’s child experienced an incident of anti-Black racism at school. It was not the first incident so she needed to confront this act of racism. This led to a recognition that if her child was going through this situation then other parents with racialized children must be having the same or similar experiences. Through continued interactions and common stories shared among parents of racialized children, it was decided to form a support group to build individual capacity to advocate for ourselves and our children. The group provided social connectedness, increased our networks, and acted as a collective body whenever we needed to go up against systemic racism. By extension, our children have built their capacity, formed friendships with each other, and built networks that will support them through incidents of anti-Black racism. From there, PARSC the non-profit organization was formed in 2022. PARSC supports and advises on equity matters for Black and racialized children who have faced discrimination or hate in the education system. PARSC actively and effectively engages education leaders, and develops frameworks that focus on dismantling systemic racism to create an equitable educational experience and systems change that is free from oppression and promotes the values of anti-racism and antihate. Our main activities include advising and reviewing systems' practices, and policies, and identifying issues to provide strategies and recommendations. PARSC offers support for Black and racialized youth and their families by providing resources and education to meet their needs; and provides system navigation and support while interacting with systems at all levels.
